Fuel Guide

Making the Right Fuel Choice

When considering which fuel to use you need to consider both your appliance type and if you live in a Smoke Control Area. Further details on Smoke Control Areas and the rules and legislation around this can be found on

https://www.gov.uk/smoke-control-area-rules

The list below identifies the type of fuels recommended for a range of appliances, we always recommend that you check with the manufactures recommendations and instructions.

Open Fires

House Coal

Wood - Well seasoned Wood can be burned on open fires. You should not use any wood which is painted or treated with preservative. The gasses given off during burning are harmful to the environment. Due to the lower heat content, you may find a mixture of Housecoal and Wood will generate more heat and last longer.

Smokeless Ovals – Suitable for Use a Smoke Control Area

Note: House coal or Wood are not authorised for use in Smoke Control Areas.

Safety
Remember to have your chimney swept by a professional sweep (either a Guild of Master Sweeps or NACS member) AT LEAST ONCE A YEAR if you use smokeless fuel and AT LEAST TWICE if you are burning wood or coal. Never light a fire for the first time without having the chimney swept. It may be blocked and harmful fumes and smoke may enter the room.

Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions on maintenance and use. If you smell fumes or smoke is entering the room, let the fire out, open the windows and leave the room. Do not relight the fire until the appliance has been checked by a qualified engineer.

Using Your Fire
Fuel usage can vary from house to house depending on your personal requirements and expectations, the appliance type and the efficiency of the chimney. No two homes are ever the same.
